About the Mediator
Elaine Thompson is a Florida Family Law Certified Mediator and an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association’s Consumer Panel. In October 2021, she added Georgia Civil Mediation to her conflict resolution areas. In addition to alternative dispute resolution, Ms. Thompson has been practicing law in Florida since 1989, and she is also licensed to practice in Georgia, the District of Columbia, and numerous federal courts.
For over thirty years, she has handled cases in appellate and trial litigation before the state and federal courts of appeal and Florida Supreme Court in matters involving criminal law and procedure, workers’ compensation, employment discrimination, family law, guardianship, personal injury, wrongful death, sovereign immunity, real estate foreclosures, Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 1983, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, state civil rights laws, Whistle-blowers claims, administrative claims, non-compete clauses, election law, and professional liability. She has also been a speaker at continuing legal education courses involving preserving issues for appeal, litigation strategy, and preparing appeals.
Ms. Thompson has always been involved in the community. She served as a member of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, president of the F. Malcolm Cunningham, Sr. Bar Association, Chair of the Florida Bar's Student Education and Admissions to the Bar Committee, Chair of the Florida Bar's Continuing Legal Education Committee, and as a member of The Florida Bar's Legal Education Assistance Program Committee. In 2015, she helped organize a college readiness mentoring group, Black Scholars Heading to College, to assist female, high school students in Hillsborough County prepare for admission to college. The next year, the Black Scholars Heading to College Program began conducting a series of free college readiness workshops which are open to the public. Since the pandemic began in 2020, the workshops are presented virtually and have reached students as far away as the midwestern and northeastern parts of the continental United States as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands.
